What to do if you are unwell over the festive period

If you are not feeling well over the festive period, please take some time to think about where you should go for help.

Many common ailments, such as colds and flu or stomach upsets can be treated without you going to GPs or local hospitals. Pharmacists often provide the appropriate help or advice you need so you can enjoy your Christmas break with your family.

Help yourself

Take control of your health and make sure you have a fully stocked medicine cabinet to help you deal with any unexpected illness. Be prepared by checking our guide.

Don’t forget there is the free NHS child health app gives easy to understand guidance on childhood illnesses. It can help you recognise when your child is unwell, and give advice on when and where to seek further treatment.

GP Appointments

If you need help from the NHS this Christmas and New Year – pharmacies and GP services are available throughout the festive break, including Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day.

Opening GP times

To book appointments call your GP during opening hours or NHS 111 outside of this where staff will signpost you to the most appropriate services.

Accident and Emergency services get ‘extremely busy’ during Christmas and New Year, so we really want you to think carefully about what service is right for you.

 

Minor Injury

A minor injury is a sprain, strain, wound infection , minor head or eye injury or insect or animal bite.

To get an appointment at Peterlee Community Hospital or Bishop Auckland Community Hospital   please dial NHS 111.

Accident and Emergency

In a life-threatening emergency visit A&E or call 999. Accident & emergency departments and 999 are for serious or life-threatening emergencies.
